Vintage Caithness Jewellery Silver Millefiori Brooch 1970s | Scottish Celtic Cross

Caithness silver millefiori brooch dating from the 1970s, featuring a striking four-armed Celtic cross design and colourful millefiori glass centre.

This unusual vintage brooch combines textured sterling silver with a beautifully patterned glass cabochon. The colourful centre contains tiny floral and geometric millefiori details, while the surrounding silverwork creates an attractive four-armed cross shape.

The reverse carries the CJ maker’s mark for Caithness Jewellery, together with Scottish hallmarks including the thistle and Edinburgh castle. In addition, the date letter S appears alongside the other marks and dates the piece to approximately 1973/74.

Caithness has a strong connection with Scottish glassmaking and became particularly well known for its colourful millefiori designs. During the 1970s, Caithness developed a range of distinctive glass and jewellery pieces that combined traditional craftsmanship with colourful contemporary designs.

The millefiori centre makes this brooch especially appealing. It features numerous small floral motifs arranged against a dark glass background, creating plenty of colour and detail. Meanwhile, the textured silver surrounding the centre gives the piece an unusual sculptural appearance.

At approximately 4cm x 4cm, this brooch makes a substantial statement when worn. It weighs 18.39g and would make an interesting addition to a collection of Scottish silver, Caithness glass or vintage jewellery.
