Vintage Herta Canadian Wildlife Series Deer Pottery Sculpture 1961
A wonderfully distinctive vintage Canadian deer sculpture dating to 1961, from the Canadian Wildlife Series by Herta.
The sculpture features a beautifully stylised black deer with an elongated neck, elegant slender legs and wonderfully simplified features. Its sculptural silhouette has a strong mid-century modern character, making it an eye-catching decorative piece for collectors of vintage sculpture and Canadian design.
The deer stands on a substantial solid walnut circular base, which provides a beautiful contrast to the dark figure. The warm natural grain of the walnut works particularly well against the almost sculptural black finish.
The underside of the walnut base carries the original identification:

The original mark makes this a particularly interesting piece for collectors, as it clearly identifies the Canadian Wildlife Series by Herta and dates the design to 1961.
At approximately 8.5 inches (21.5cm) tall including the base, with a 3.5-inch (9cm) diameter walnut base, it has a lovely presence without taking up much space.
Its simple, elongated form gives it a wonderfully modern appearance, while the walnut base adds warmth and a distinctly mid-century feel. It would look equally at home displayed on a bookshelf, sideboard, console or amongst a collection of vintage ceramics and modernist decorative pieces.
